The essays in Black Environmentalisms foreground the ecological worldmaking practices of black people across the planet to chart new pathways of environmental criticism.
In Black Environmentalisms, editors Cajetan Iheka and Jonathan Howard reengage African and African Diaspora studies around the urgent question of environmental crisis. Probing the continuities between global antiblackness and the endangerment of planetary life, contributors argue that black life and expressive culture constitute unique sources of ecological thought and practice. Across a wide variety of black geographies and thought, their essays bear witness to not only black ecological precarity but also the cultivational practices that people of African descent have summoned over time to combat their exploitation and enact a living relationship to the earth. As they show, the rich practices of black communities emerge from a radical alignment with, rather than paternalistic conservation of, the nonhuman natural world. Reimagining environmentalism beyond the limits of western humanism, Black Environmentalisms charts new pathways of environmental criticism by foregrounding the ecological worldmaking practices of black people across the planet.
Cajetan Iheka is Professor of English at Yale University.
Jonathan Howard is Assistant Professor of Black Studies and English at Yale University.
"Black Environmentalisms is a great ceiba tree, planted firmly in the legacy of Black ecological scholarship and reaching its crown toward a post-plantationocene future where love, not domination, is our societal currency. Its sheltering roots are robust and wide, encompassing the Black ecologies of Africa and the diaspora, urban and rural, and empirical and transcendent ways of knowing. The ceiba's guardians are Iheka and Howard, and their impressive team of today's most brilliant Afro-ecological scholars, who elucidate the intertwined nature of the tree's antagonists--petro-imperialism, extractivism, colonialism, genocide, and environmental policing--and how our cultural tools of rhythm, orality, and insurgency are among the seeds of ecological survival. Black Environmentalisms is a must-have for every public library, university seminar room, and Black land project."--Leah Penniman, Co-Founder of Soul Fire Farm, Author of, Farming While Black and Black Earth Wisdom
